Frogs and toads belong to the order Anura. All frogs and toads lay their eggs in or near water, which then hatch into tadpoles. The tadpoles have gills and tails and are confined to water for the first part of their lives. They gradually lose their tails and develop legs and lungs. The distinction between frogs and toads is not often clear. Species are often labeled toads because they have adapted to a drier environment and developed wartier skin. Only one family, Bufonidae, is referred to as the "true toad" family.
